Deciding to risk your money in an investment is a big decision, however a decision that can also have big returns while minimizing the risk as well. So, if you are interested in saving for the future and making more money from an investment, then you should definitely consider the many benefits offered to investors of mutual funds. Some of the reasons why mutual funds are good investments include great management, access to money in an emergency, investment diversity, and other personalized services.

When you invest in a mutual fund company your investments will be given top priority and managed by professionals experienced and knowledgeable in managing portfolios and mutual funds. This is an amazing opportunity for your investments because they will be watched at all times to make sure they are performing as well as possible. Your mutual funds managers know what a good investment is and what is not, because it is their job. If you leave your investments to them you will likely see faster and better results than on your own.

Also, when you invest in mutual funds you will generally have access to them at all times for emergency purposes. That is to say if you need money for an emergency or other situation you will more than likely be able to sell your mutual funds for market value, unless your mutual fund company has a rule against this and most do not. While you don’t anticipate having any financial emergencies, it is nice to know that if one arises you will be able to access your money.

Another great benefit of a mutual fund investment is that your dollars are spread out and invested in a variety of securities so as to make the most of your investment and provide additional security. This protects against the whims of the market to some extent so your investment will not suffer overall due to rises and falls of the market. You would not be able to invest your funds this way on your own, but your mutual fund company can and it will protect you and make you more money.

Additionally, when you invest your money with a mutual fund company you will find that not only will your money be well managed but also you will receive additional services. These services include automatic reinvestment of the funds, direct transfer of funds as well as a variety of other services.

If you have considered investing and were not sure the best method, then definitely consider making your investment in mutual funds because you will have a higher return on your money and less risk. Do some additional research if you want to know more information.

Article by Scott Kibby

It is easy to understand why people would invest in mutual funds, but is it really a smart play? I would say the majority of investors select mutual funds because a) it is easy b) they think the professionals must be able to do better than them c) only option in their company’s 401K. Now there isn’t anything you can do about a company not offering self directed accounts, but most investors even given the option would go mutual funds over selecting stocks themselves. To compound the problem, the majority of investors select the top returning mutual funds from the previous year when they select one. If a mutual fund they own is doing bad, they will drop that one and take the highest returning fund in their pool of funds. Statistics prove that this strategy will not beat the S&P 500 over the long haul.

There is no doubt that there plenty of good mutual funds out there; in fact there are some great ones. The problem is the majority of investors are not in these funds. I’ve read multiple articles with various stats on how many mutual funds actually beat the S&P 500 year over year. These numbers generally are between 10 and 20 percent, which is a staggering number if you think about it. Why would you want to park your money in a fund that isn’t beating the indexes on a consistent basis? Why not just pick an index fund and avoid the fees.

Does anyone like paying fees? I know I don’t and mutual funds charge you fees to run your account. They generally run between 1 and 2 percent, which may not sound like much but it can add up in a hurry. If you started with ,000 and earned a compounded return rate of 7% in 20 years it would be ,697. Now lets say with that same starting figure you earn 8.5% (1.5% increase from above), your new total after 20 years would be ,120. Now doesn’t that extra money in your wallet/purse look nice just by avoiding fees!

If you have a fund that isn’t performing well, we can assume the manager of the fund will likely swap in and out of winners and losers he or she is holding. They undoubtedly will not sit on their hands and watch their stock selections circle the drain. This movement in stocks is music to the ears of the brokerage firms that has their account. They are collecting transactions fees for every stock they get in and out of. Who do you think is paying for that?

Okay this is all fine and dandy but you don’t have the time to pick stocks. It doesn’t take as much time as you think with stock screeners and the amount of information on the internet these days. Now there are hundreds of different approaches to investing in stocks, so I won’t get into which way is the best. You know your risk tolerance and can select stocks off that. If don’t trust yourself picking stocks you can select stocks that the dependable investors like Warren Buffett or Carl Icahn select. You can even find several mutual funds that have historically beat the market over the years and look at their top 10 holdings. If they are in these stocks and have traditionally beat the major indexes, then they most likely are pretty good stocks.

The key to making your stock picks work for you is staying diversified. To what level of diversification should you have your portfolio setup? That again depends on your risk tolerance, but keeping your stocks spread out amongst the different sectors is a good way to avoid heavy losses. If you spent a little time researching stocks, you will see it is time well spent in most cases.

I know selecting stocks can be a scary process for a lot of people but at the very least aren’t you better off in an index fund with no fees. When I am working on my portfolio I have my best interest in mind and I’m not sure that always happens when other people are playing with your money. As an exercise, it might be a good idea to write down stocks you are thinking of buying and track how they are doing compared to your mutual fund. What have you got to lose except the fees.

Non Residential Indians (NRIs) often ask whether they can invest in Mutual Funds in India or not. The answer is YES!! NRIs can invest in mutual funds in India and these investments can be made on a repatriable or on a non-repatriable basis, as preferred by the investor.

What is ‘repatriable’ basis? To invest on a ‘repatriable’ basis, the NRI must have a Non Resident External (NRE) or FCNR Bank Account in India. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has granted a general permission to ‘Mutual Funds’ to offer mutual fund schemes on repatriation basis, subject to the following conditions:

1) The Mutual Fund should comply with the terms and conditions stipulated by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

2) The amount representing investment should be received by inward remittance through normal banking channels, or by debit to an NRE / FCNR account of the non-resident investor.

3) The net amount representing a dividend / interest and maturity proceeds of units may be remitted through normal banking channels or credited to NRE / FCNR account of the investor, as desired by him subject to payment of applicable tax.

What is ‘non-repatriable’ basis? The RBI has granted a general permission to ‘Mutual Funds’ to offer mutual fund schemes on non-repatriation basis, subject to the following conditions:

1) Funds for investment should be provided by debit to National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) account of the investor. Alternatively, funds may be invested by inward remittance or by debit to NRE / FCNR account.

2) The current income in the form of dividends is allowed to be repatriated.

It is important and useful to note here that no permission of the RBI either by the Mutual Fund or the investor is necessary.

Does an NRI need any approval from the RBI to invest in mutual fund schemes? Many NRIs think that they need approval of the RBI to invest in mutual fund schemes in India. This is a myth. A NRI does not require any approval. Only the OCBs and FIIs require approval of the RBI to invest in mutual fund schemes.

If you understand how to invest in mutual funds you can easily find a way to improve your finances.

Everyone wants easy money. If you have money sitting around and are not using it, it is natural to turn to the stock market as an investment option.

Unfortunately the stock market is fickle and it is far too easy to loose money if you don’t know what you are doing. Most people have no idea where to start, let alone how to actually make money.

The amount of research needed to make good investment choices is overwhelming. Fortunately small investors no longer need to do this research. Mutual fund providers do the research for you and present a range of options you can understand.

With managers and brokers who understand the current markets and who understand how to take advantage of it, mutual funds give investors an upper edge in investment. Those who choose the stocks that make up the funds keep up-to-date with all the information and make choices to make their mutual fund the most profitable to all involved.

Some mutual funds wind up costing investors a lot of money. Managers and brokers take fees to pay for their expertise. When investing, it is smart to look for a no penalty mutual fund to minimize extra fees.

No load funds are in fact just as good as mutual funds where you can expect to pay fees. Sometimes they are even better. Having extra fees does not make your investment any more secure or productive.

There is an amazing amount of information available for those who are looking to invest. You can find information in books and articles from magazines and financial journals. Newspapers often discuss investment information in their financial pages. There are many websites and other internet sources with lots of investment information. Many mutual funds also offer pamphlets to read at no cost. By researching you can learn all about your investment possibilities.

It is very important to read up as much as you can before investing. It is your knowledge that will help you find a mutual fund that suits your needs.

Tips on hidden fees and unseen risks will help you understand what goes on behind the scenes in the mutual fund world. You can avoid many pitfalls by researching carefully. There is also a lot of information on the history of individual companies and funds and you can track their performance to see their track record.

It is easy to buy into a mutual fund once you find one that suits your needs. With lots of information available you can be in charge of your investment choices and know how to invest in mutual funds effectively. Louis Zhang, imutualfundsinvest dot com

Bill Gates probably doesn’t invest in mutual funds (funds), maybe because most of his money is tied up in Microsoft stock. Warren Buffet made his billions by managing investments, so he does not need their help, either. But, if you have money to invest and don’t really know how to invest and manage an investment portfolio, you should consider investing in mutual funds. Millions of average investors do.

Keep in mind that mutual funds are designed for folks who want professional investment management at a moderate cost. These are not short-term investments, but rather are for people with longer-term investment horizons. Once you have cash reserves in the bank for short term needs like emergencies, you are ready to invest.

Should you invest in mutual funds? If one or more of the following apply to you, you probably should.

If you want to accumulate a nest egg for retirement, give these investment packages consideration. For example, if you have a typical 401k plan at work, most of the investment options available to you are mutual funds.

If you decide to open a traditional IRA or Roth IRA, consider going with a major mutual fund family. This will give you a wide array of investment options, from safe and conservative to aggressive and growth oriented.

If you want to start slow and learn how to invest as you go, you should invest in mutual funds. For example, you can set things up so that 0 a month automatically flows from your checking account to a couple of mutual funds within a fund family.

If you want to invest in stocks and/or bonds, but don’t know how to invest in them, join the crowd and do it the sensible and easy way with funds.

If you have a lump sum of money to invest from a retirement plan, a CD that matured or from an inheritance, look no further. For example, if you leave your job where you had money in a 401k, you can move it and avoid taxes and penalties with a direct rollover to a mutual fund family.

If you are retired and want to earn a higher return with relative safety, try bond funds in addition to money market funds. When you want to receive a monthly income, they will send you the amount you specify.

If you want an investment in real estate, oil & gas, or gold the easy way, invest in mutual funds and let them deal with the details.

It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, rich or of modest means, conservative or aggressive as an investor. You need an investment portfolio that contains a variety of investment types. Unless you really know how to invest and can manage your own stocks, bonds, and money market securities…you should invest in mutual funds.

Finally, if you don’t know much about investing…you’re probably a red-blooded American. As a financial planner I worked with folks from all walks of life. Few knew how to invest on their own, so I often recommended mutual funds.

For individuals just getting involved in the game of investing, there is a lot of wonder circulating around mutual funds. Certain questions such as, “What are the risks associated with mutual funds?” and “Are they a good investment?” are questions that are frequently asked amongst investors. However, it is good to ask these questions because asking questions about mutual funds shows that a person means serious business when it comes to investing. All investors want the best return they can possibly get on their investment, so exploring the many options available are important. When it comes to mutual funds, there are many options. That is why it is good to know at least the basics.

The basics

Mutual funds consists of money from many different investors that is pooled together and invested into short-term money markets, stocks, bonds, various other assets or securities, or maybe even a combination of any of these. Each investor owns a portion of the holdings that the fund possesses and the income that is generated from these holdings.

There are several factors that distinguish mutual funds from other types of funds. Those factors are:

- The shares are purchased from the actual fund instead of from other investors via such avenues as NASDAQ or NYSE.

- The purchase price is the price per share plus any fees imposed by the fund at the time. These are commonly referred to as shareholder fees.

- When selling the shares, you are selling them back to the fund.

- New investors are accommodated through the creation of new funds that can be sold to them.

- Investment advisors that are registered with the SEC are typically who takes care of mutual funds.

Advantages and disadvantages

There are advantages and disadvantages to mutual funds. The advantages include:

- Diversification of your portfolio – This is important in investing because a diversified portfolio has better earning potential.

- They are affordable – There is a high degree of affordability when it comes to mutual funds. Dollar amounts can be set low for purchases, giving lower income individuals the ability to invest.

- Managed professionally – There are professionals who are constantly monitoring the performance of these mutual funds and always looking for the best investments for the fund in order to maximize its return to its investors.

- Liquidity – Investors are able to redeem their shares at the current NAV. This is in addition to any fees or charges assessed at that time.

The advantages make it clear that a mutual fund can be a great investment, but like any type of investment there are some disadvantages that come along with them as well. Those disadvantages include:

- There are annual fees, charges for sales, and other fees associated with them. It doesn’t matter how the fund performs. These costs still apply. Taxes also have to be paid on gains. This refers to any distributions received even if the fund performed poorly.

- Investors do not control their shares. The make-up of the portfolio is decided by the manager of the fund.

- There is uncertainty that surrounds the price of shares. It isn’t like how you can follow regular shares of stock in real-time during trading hours. There is a delay in you finding out what your share is within a mutual fund since you are sharing the fund with other investors.

So now that you see the advantages and the disadvantages, you can decide which way to go. However, you have to weigh them against each other. An example: Although you don’t have control, the fund is under professional control. Mutual funds have helped put money in people’s pockets, so mutual funds can be a great way to invest for your future. Just make sure you find a fund that performs well.
