If you’re en voled in online stock trading then you know how important it is to have timely and quality information. From experience the best way to get this information is to become a member of a good online stock trading forum.

Benefits:

In any business it’s good to be able to discuss things with others in the same field, and if none of your friends or family are involved in trading stocks it can be hard to find someone to talk to. Online stock trading forums are a great way to fill this gap. You’ll be introduced to many others that are playing the same game you are, and you can get others views on trading techniques, and other interpretations about the market. Often you can pick up tips and tricks that will be useful to you in future trading situations that you might otherwise not have had.

More then just education another great benefit of stock trading forums is that they’re a wonderful source of ideas. You don’t have to come up with all of your own trades; on many stock trading forums there is a pooling of ideas and a much broader mind base to come up with good finds for stock buys.

One of the nicest things about these forums is that they’re open discussions and everyone is free to participate. Knowledge is shared from all over the world not just your local community or state. Also if you’re stuck on something and need a quick answer there’s no faster way then posting your question in a good online stock trading forum. You’ll likely get a speedy response, and more then one point of view on your issue this is the type of environment that just wasn’t available before the Internet.

There are a lot of forums to choose from online, it’s important that you select the right one and become a member of a thriving stock community. Other wise bad advice on the wrong forum could bring about big financial loses.

A couple to check out would be:FOREX Forum:

Now a little different then the penny stock forum above, the FOREX forum is the most popular on the topic. Hundreds of traders involved in the FOREX markets post a ton of messages every day. This forums main purpose is for generating new trading ideas. Something unique to this forum is that no advertisements are permitted meaning it maintains a good clean look, and it’s dedicated to it’s users.

The Pennystockpile:

This forum covers everything penny stocks, tactics and ideas on how to trade them and how to best go about small cap stock trading. Also on this forum you’ll find daily stock picks, with descriptions for why they’re a good consideration for your next trade.

Now there are other forums out there, and I urge you to do your own research, and ask fellow investors for input. Once you’ve made your selection be sure to read the rules of posting to ensure you don’t make a mistake. Often certain particulars or recommendations aren’t allowed on stock trading forums.

Article by Barbara Cohen

You might want to think back for a minute why you got into that Mutual Fund to begin with. Did your broker tell you it was a safe investment? Did your broker say it would beat the S&P 500 average? Did your broker show you some previous returns and say “look at how well this fund performed in the past?”

Whatever the reason was then, ask yourself, is that reason still valid today? The fund you bought yesterday may be time to sell today. The question is…how do you know? What do the large institutions focus on when they upgrade or downgrade a mutual fund, and shouldn’t you be focusing on the same things? Do a little research and find out answers to the following…

1) Is it the same fund manager as when you bought? Fund managers change, they move on, they get demoted or fired. Has fund management changed and are you really in a different fund?

2) Does the fund still meet your overall risk profile? Has the fund lost so much money that it no longer provides a safe return on investment? Is staying in the fund more risky than sitting on the sidelines in cash?3) Is the fund still investing in the same types of instruments as when you first bought into the fund? Mutual funds often change instruments because the original instruments are no longer lucrative. Say you invested in a fund that primarily invested in financial stocks. Today, financial stocks have taken a real beating. Mutual fund managers have had to exit out of those stock positions and get into others. When was the last time you looked at the set of stocks your mutual fund is now trading?

4) How is your mutual fund now performing? What if your mutual fund no longer is producing gains for you, should you remain in that fund? And how many quarters of loss are you willing to take before you say to yourself, enough is enough. Not every mutual fund does well every quarter. But how many down quarters will it take before you decide to move on. Many fund managers will say “I didn’t lose as much money as the other fund managers.” Is this reason enough to stay with that fund? Have you ever seen a fund put money back into your account after they took losses?

5) Probably the most important question you need to ask yourself is…”was it a mistake to buy into the fund in the first place.” Think back to what you were doing when you first bought into the fund. Maybe you were working for a company and it was part of the 401K. Maybe your spouse saw an advertisement for the fund. Maybe your friends were in the fund and recommended it to you. But perhaps you yourself didn’t do your homework on the fund to know that this was really where you wanted to invest. While it may be hard to admit your mistake, it may be harmful to remain in the fund just so that you don’t have to admit your mistakes.

Mutual funds are a mixed blessing. When the fund is doing well, you pat yourself on the back and tell youself its ok to have someone else, a professional, manage your money. And when that fund takes a dump, isn’t it always easy to blame that someone else for your losses? The real fact of the matter is that you need to take responsibility for your own portfolio. You should never just trust a broker to make the decisions about your financial future.

If you are ready to learn to day trade your own account, even some portion of your own account, perhaps you should look at Shadowtraders.com. They will start you at the beginning and walk you through the maze of confusion that is the financial world.

Should You Invest in Mutual Funds

Article by James Leitz

Bill Gates probably doesn’t invest in mutual funds (funds), maybe because most of his money is tied up in Microsoft stock. Warren Buffet made his billions by managing investments, so he does not need their help, either. But, if you have money to invest and don’t really know how to invest and manage an investment portfolio, you should consider investing in mutual funds. Millions of average investors do.

Keep in mind that mutual funds are designed for folks who want professional investment management at a moderate cost. These are not short-term investments, but rather are for people with longer-term investment horizons. Once you have cash reserves in the bank for short term needs like emergencies, you are ready to invest.

Should you invest in mutual funds? If one or more of the following apply to you, you probably should.

If you want to accumulate a nest egg for retirement, give these investment packages consideration. For example, if you have a typical 401k plan at work, most of the investment options available to you are mutual funds.

If you decide to open a traditional IRA or Roth IRA, consider going with a major mutual fund family. This will give you a wide array of investment options, from safe and conservative to aggressive and growth oriented.

If you want to start slow and learn how to invest as you go, you should invest in mutual funds. For example, you can set things up so that 0 a month automatically flows from your checking account to a couple of mutual funds within a fund family.

If you want to invest in stocks and/or bonds, but don’t know how to invest in them, join the crowd and do it the sensible and easy way with funds.

If you have a lump sum of money to invest from a retirement plan, a CD that matured or from an inheritance, look no further. For example, if you leave your job where you had money in a 401k, you can move it and avoid taxes and penalties with a direct rollover to a mutual fund family.

If you are retired and want to earn a higher return with relative safety, try bond funds in addition to money market funds. When you want to receive a monthly income, they will send you the amount you specify.

If you want an investment in real estate, oil & gas, or gold the easy way, invest in mutual funds and let them deal with the details.

It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, rich or of modest means, conservative or aggressive as an investor. You need an investment portfolio that contains a variety of investment types. Unless you really know how to invest and can manage your own stocks, bonds, and money market securities…you should invest in mutual funds.

Finally, if you don’t know much about investing…you’re probably a red-blooded American. As a financial planner I worked with folks from all walks of life. Few knew how to invest on their own, so I often recommended mutual funds.

One of the rising investment options these days are foreign currency mutual funds. Most people who have spent a good amount of time in the currency exchange business often look for ways in which they can expand profits from currency exchange thus, foreign currency mutual funds seem to be promising. However, there may be some good points to consider first before undergoing this process such as:

1. Your expertise – Mixing the business of getting into mutual funds with that of currency exchange may be daunting for someone who is yet to go into forex for a long time. It might be better to go into this if you already have enough experience that you know the ins and outs of forex already. From this expertise you can leverage on entering into mutual funds with at least most of your time spent on learning about the latter.

2. Your currency coverage – Going into foreign currency mutual funds business might also require you to have a wider grasp of currency exchanges. Some mutual funds may mature faster but under the second tier currencies. Major currencies may have spikes in their growth and might get a little risky if invested on. So it would be best to have a larger scope of options as you begin to make your mutual funds investments.

3. The length required for the mutual funds to grow profits – For the time being, you might need to constantly supply your mutual funds with currency circulations. So you also need to know about the maturity periods involved in the funds. This is important so you need to know this before you enter into such a process.

Keep in mind that learning about foreign currency mutual funds is also important to consider before undergoing the said process. You can always do this by means of the following ways:

Try to read up on articles online – The internet is peppered with ways and means on which you can learn more about the course of entering into foreign currency mutual funds. Take advantage of free articles which you can easily retrieve from article directories online. You might also want to try checking out the websites of financing institutions and read their entries regarding mutual funds so you can have a better idea regarding the process.

Consider reading and being active in public forums – Online forums are also a great way to obtain information. These forums are mostly set up for free and all you have to do is register and sign up so that you can also begin to post your own threads and ask for questions you wanted people to answer and even discuss on. One of the great things about public forums is that you can also get first-hand accounts from people who may have already gone through or are currently going through foreign currency mutual funds.

Consider mutual funds courses – If you wanted to gain in-depth knowledge or better expertise when it comes to mutual funds, you might want to sign up for an online course. This way you can get a more focused way of learning about the process and you can also have an expert to ask about its specifics.

Article by James Woolley

The great thing about stock trading is that there are literally thousands of stocks to trade, and this applies to most stock markets all around the world. However you still need to be selective if you are serious about making money because some stocks are better than others. The best stocks to trade are generally those that are trending strongly upwards or downwards.

This isn’t always true of course. There are times when stocks will drift sideways for months on end before bursting into life and breaking out of their trading range, providing you with a good breakout trade. However it’s often a lot easier to stick with the mid and large cap stocks that are already in established trends.

These stocks are widely traded and can provide you with some great trading opportunities. The key is to keep an eye on the wider stock market, such as the FTSE 100 if trading UK stocks or the Dow Jones / S&P 500 if trading US stocks, and trade in the same direction as this market.

For instance if we assume that you are trading large cap US stocks, then you want to be looking to go long on a particular stock if the S&P 500 is trending upwards and short when it is heading downwards. This takes a lot of the guesswork out of trading and will generate much better results because you always have the trend on your side.

Many of the most successful traders simply trade with the trend. If the wider stock market is going up they will simply look for stocks that are making new highs and ride the trend. They may also use a few technical indicators for additional confirmation of a potential set-up.

For example if a stock is making a new high and it’s supported by the MACD crossing upwards, or the RSI or stochastic indicator crossing upwards through the 50 level, for instance, then this is a very positive sign that a stock is likely to continue moving higher.

Anyway the point is that it’s always a good idea to find stocks that are trending in the same direction as the wider market, and trade in the same direction as the trend. You could trade price breakouts or you could simply trade counter-trends where the wider stock market is heading higher but the stock in question has headed lower or remained flat before turning upwards. Either method can yield excellent results and they are both good ways of trading individual stocks.

You can be on your way to doubling your money in 3 years by trading Mutual Funds and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) rather than individual stocks.

DIVERSIFICATION

The most important reason is the diversification that Mutual Funds and Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) provide. With an individual stock you are exposed to the possibility that one of your stocks could get hit by bad news and plummet in price. It takes a long time to recover from one of these massive hits.

PROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT

Skilled Mutual Funds managers spend every day determining which stocks to buy and sell. These managers companies have teams that examine quarterly and annual reports, interview Company executives; visit factories and review market share trends to get know the companies on a comprehensive basis, and avoid buying stocks when they are over-bought from a technical standpoint. There is no way an individual investor can compete with this level of sophistication.

ECONOMIES OF SCALE

Mutual Funds are able to take advantage of their buying and selling size to reduce transaction costs. This means a savings for the individual mutual fund investors enabling the individual investor to diversify without paying numerous commission charges involved in buying 15 to 20 individual stocks needed for diversification.

DIVISIBILITY

If someone only has $500 or $1,000 to invest, it is often insufficient to purchase an individual stock, especially after deducting commissions. Investors can buy mutual funds or add to their existing mutual fund holdings with a very small investment to keep their money working for them. With mutual funds, investors can hold fractional amounts as well.

GETTING STARTED

I invest my own money in every one of my Mutual Fund and Exchange Traded Funds trading systems. I subscribe to several advisory services to keep my universe of possible investments up to date. I utilize four different pieces of technical analysis software to determine which funds to buy, when to buy, and when it is time to sell.

I employ a strict stop loss and profit-protect methodology to keep my losses small and let my profits run. My approach is biased to the conservative side. I want to constantly upgrade my various mutual fund holdings so that I am holding the best mutual funds available.

Whenever I plan to buy or sell one of my holdings, I send my subscribers an email telling them exactly what I am doing, why I am doing it, and when I am plan to make the trades. I do the work so you don’t have to. And, importantly, it will take you less than 30 minutes per month to make the trades with your on-line broker. You too can join me and my fellow investors and double your money in the next 3 years.

Gerry Wollert has been trading stocks for over 40 years and mutual funds for over 25 years. He now manages his personal investments

With so many options out there for the individual investor, it is sometimes difficult to determine that investments are right for you. The key to having a long-term, stable and profitable portfolio is to diversify your investments. For many investors the process of diversification includes investing in both mutual funds and stocks. The best course is to learn all you can about both types of investments and find your ideal balance between the two.

Mutual funds are open-end funds that are not listed for trading on a stock exchange. They are created by companies who use their capital to invest in other companies. Mutual funds will sell their own new shares to investors. Capitalization is not fixed and normally shares are issued as people want them.

1. Mutual funds have great characteristics for investors

Mutual funds are professionally managed. The mutual funds employ professional managers to operate all investing. These professional managers bring with them many years of experience. They are experts in selecting and evaluating investments for the fund. The managers make all of the buying decisions and selling decisions that relieves the individual investors from that responsibility.

2. Mutual Funds Are Diversified

Another advantage of mutual funds is that most of their portfolios are highly diversified. This means that the mutual fund is invested in a wide variety of stocks. The advantage of diversification is that if a few stocks drop in price the entire fund won™t be dramatically affected. Diversification occurs by investing in many different companies. It can also be accomplished by investing in several different industries. The advantage of diversifying through mutual funds is that the funds can reach a wider diversification than can be reached by individual investors.

3. There are thousands of mutual funds to choose from

Depending on your preferences, you can choose to invest with a mutual fund that covers the whole market or with a fund that focuses on one or two industries. There are even mutual funds available that invest only in foreign markets. Mutual funds can be very convenient for the investor since the fund does all the record keeping. Your mutual fund will provide you with all the forms you need to file your taxes. Additionally, many may offer perks such as the ability to write checks against the money market fund.

4. Stocks Have Greater Returns (Potentially)

On the other hand, purchasing individual stocks has attractive features as well. After the brokerage fee is paid, there is no ongoing fee associate with owning individual stocks. This is in contrast to mutual funds that charge a participation fee. Mutual fund fees can totally negate the mutual fund return that you are expecting.

With investing in individual stocks, an investor has the ability to be very flexible with their investing and move with market if they so desire. Mutual funds are very stable but this also keeps them slow. Individual stock investments can be traded quickly if need be, and purchased just as quickly if the investor finds an undervalued stock.

5. More Control

With individual stock investing, an investor has a greater level of control over their investing. Although brokerage firms are involved there is the opportunity to be more hands on with the stock purchases. This level of involvement is impossible with mutual funds. Many investors like to know exactly where their money is going and this can be hard with a mutual fund that holds shares in 50 or more companies. Investing in individual stocks allows the investor to have a larger relationship with the company they are investing in. This can create a sense of comfort for the investor because they know where their money is being used. They can track the activities of the company they have invested in and feel like a true part of that company.

6. The Verdict

Investing a mixture of mutual funds and individual stocks seems to the best method for a majority of investors. Those who do not want to take the time to research their stocks and would rather let an expert handle things are more comfortable with mutual funds. On the other end of the spectrum, those who want a greater level of participation with their investments will find individual stock investing attractive. As part of a long-term diversification strategy it may be best to look into both in the ratio that you are comfortable with.
